Calling the Deep
July 28 - Aug 22, 2015
In Calling the Deep, Jo Langford stacks thin fragments of cast cement with precarious balance and great care. She builds up considered complex structures, little temples of thought. Some are suspended, their weight floating elegantly in space. Others stand on the floor. And then she takes our attention to what might be beneath.
Bamboo skewers (of all things), painted in alternating bands of high vis orange and white, extend out from these structures and hang, sounding out what might be below. These are instruments of survey within this constructed terrain. They whisper of the colonial and the industrial. They listen for oil, water or in Christchurch’s case, geotechnical data – all the mysteries of the subterranean which are given wonderful license in this weird geology. Sculpture here is layered strata, shaped and formed as delicate poetry over time.
