House Studies
April 15 - May 7, 2016
Curated by Sophie Bannan
The following extract is from a text written by curator Sophie Bannan, to accompany the exhibition House Studies.
"House Studies brings together work by artists that is the product (or work-in-progress) of exhaustive research into specific practitioners.
The work in this exhibition expands a certain logic, the logic here being understanding or knowing the thing and its facts. It looks widely beyond the thing, pulls in other things, disrupts the logic. This disruption is where a feeling can be made.
As a curatorial proposition, House Studies prioritises feeling over thinking.
Between the artists in this exhibition, and the practitioners that form the subject of their research, a fictional community of practice is formed.
There are ghosts in this room.
Some can be named: Olivia Spencer Bower, William Sutton, Pierre Bonnard, Marcel Broodthaers.
And some are less specific: St Kevin's Arcade, 133 Manchester Street, the M.E. Mahoney house, Canterbury studio ceramics, the Central Otago hills, Olivia's tussocks, a kiln with myths, the coast of the North Island, the remains of a Chinese settlement in Arrowtown...."
