Jonathan Smart Gallery is delighted to present Liquid, Rachel Zanders’ first project in New Zealand for 10 years.
Our times are characterised by the idea of change, against a backdrop that is liquid - always on the edge of invisibility. Questions of identity and positioning, where conflicting value systems are endlessly in play, seem to crowd in from every side.
Rachel Zanders experimental work aims towards mixing and dissolving boundaries. Her work acknowledges artists from the crucial period of innovation and change of the 1960's, including the Arte Povera movement which promoted the use of everyday materials in protest to the dehumanising nature of consumer capitalism.
Focusing on the touch or meeting of two colours, a chain of colour coded objects made of interconnected parts - often situated between the centre and the margin of an object - implies an unfixed or hovering position.
A cloth backdrop suggests a provisional approach to painting, one that makes itself, eventually to be rolled or folded up for easy transportation.
Made up of multiple chairs, some structures suggest a community of interconnected parts, yet employ elements that can be easily broken, intimating failure or a sense of the incomplete.
