Jonathan Smart Gallery is pleased to present the exhibition New Arrangements by Ōtautahi Christchurch-based artist Steve Carr. Five large-format framed photographs command the space of the front gallery, with two bronze sculptures and a video work completing the show.
The artist describes this body of work as "exploring materiality, humour and vastly different time scales. Documentation through still and moving images sits with classical sculptural techniques of bronze casting to reproduce the forms of mundane and manufactured objects. These are paired with carefully placed supplements: explosions, pooling water, smoke, and urine. Wrestling with brute materials, whether monumental, preparatory, every day or temporary, these investigations manifest variations in speed and slowness, the kinetic and the still."
