Artist's Statement

In this current body of paintings entitled Shallow Depth and Silenced, the relationship between the poured paint and its ground is relevant in that tools, such as brushes or painting knives, are not used. The canvas is rocked in order to disperse the paint. As such, the ground and support along with the viscosity of the paint assert and define material presence.

Silenced #11 detailIn some instances, the paint is removed with a squeegee and the pouring process is repeated. A residue of the previous pour and removal becomes the under-painting for the next layer. The resulting image is an amalgam of Shallow Depth #94stains, washes and blurs, that depending on the viewer's proximity, optically advance or recede creating a shallow depth. Under closer viewing, the paint and support assert their material qualities and immanence.

In these works, 'interference' paint is employed on the final layer. This paint contains no pigments but produces an optical shift in colour. The strength and colour value of the interference paint is defined by the colour of the previous layer of paint or ground, and by the viewer's proximity to the work. In this sense, the colour can oscillate in terms of its intensity. There, and simultaneously not there. Mute. Silenced.
